A Guide to Weeknight Wine Pairings

It's true, the right bottle of wine can make steak more delicious. But we don't always have time to craft a beautiful steak or a perfect roasted chicken. What should you open for those last-minute weeknight meals? You know, when you throw together ingredients from a box, or phone in your go-to delivery order.

Wine and food don't have to be fancy to taste delicious together. Just take buttered popcorn and sparkling wine for example: together, the creaminess and the crispness complement each other to create a wonderful overall taste.

Whether you're making mac' n cheese, ordering pizza, or having a light salad, here are a few ways to create a delicious pairing ANY night of the week.

Slow Cooker Beef and Potatoes: Bold Red Wine

For juicy meat dishes, look for a hearty red wine with plenty of body and tannins to stand up against the rich, savory flavors. Our powerful 2017 La Scelta Personale Montepulciano d'Abruzzo D.O.C. from Italy is up to the task. It's a bold red with notes of dark fruit and tobacco that taste great paired with meat.

Taco Casserole: Flavorful White Wine

For creamy casseroles or even cheesy macaroni, go with a flavor-heavy white wine that can cut through the hearty flavors and ingredients, such as 2017 De La Rougerie Chardonnay. If your seasoning is on the spicier side, try 2017 Due Mari Primitivo I.G.T., a rich red with berry and spice notes that are perfect with flavorful and spicy foods.

Saucy Tomato Dishes: Fruity Red Wine

This is an easy one. If you're eating Italian food, you can't go wrong with Italian wine! Whether you're serving marinara pasta or pepperoni pizza, you especially want a fruity, high-acid red, such as 2017 Cala De' Poeti Sangiovese I.G.T. It's a delicious match for acidic and flavorful tomato-based sauces.

Salads or Veggies: Crisp White Wine

With fresh salads or cooked vegetables, nothing pairs as well as a crisp, high-acid Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Grigio. Try 2018 Cocoparra Sauvignon Blanc, a fresh and zesty white with passion fruit and guava notes that will taste delicious with a spring salad. For artichoke risotto or other dishes with vegetables mixed in, pour 2017 Cala De' Poeti Pinot Grigio I.G.T., a delicate white from Italy that will enhance the flavors.

Quick note on veggies: Avoid wines with heavy tannins or bitter notes because these can taste overly harsh when paired with bitter greens!
