Bordeaux built the blueprint here: Cabernet Sauvignon for structure, Merlot for plush fruit, Cabernet Franc rounding out the edges, no single grape carrying the whole wine. A GSM blend does something similar with Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre, trading Bordeaux's polish for a looser, spicier, more fruit-forward style out of Southern France and California alike.
That's really the appeal of a blend over a single varietal: Bordeaux reds get their aging power from Cabernet but stay approachable thanks to Merlot, something one grape alone rarely pulls off. Once you're picking a blend instead of a varietal, you're really picking a balance.
