Lot 925 is a California Red Blend modeled after the classic Rhone-style “GSM” (Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre) blends from southern France. A deep ruby color leads to aromas and flavors of blueberry and savory black pepper courtesy of the Syrah, while Grenache brings lifted, beautiful raspberry and red fruit notes. The Mourvèdre builds structure, along with notes of cocoa and mocha. Juicy and mouth-watering once it hits your lips, the palate is firm but smooth with extremely well-integrated tannins. Patterned after the best southern Rhône reds, Lot 925 marries Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre (the classic GSM Rhône blend!) into a ripe, juicy, complex sipper that leverages the various micro- and meso-climates across California, where each of the varieties ripens optimally (areas like Sonoma, and Contra Costa County). Not only that, but the winemaking was in impeccable hands: this Lot’s source winery is a long-time family producer that set up shop in the early 1980s and has been a leader among the “Rhone Rangers” movement in California ever since. Over the decades, they’ve racked up dozens and dozens of 90+ critic scores, along with Gold Medals and Best-In-Class awards from numerous wine competitions.

Beautifully dark in the glass, the nose is an elegant composite of black cherries and red plum backed by clay pot and chocolate. The entry explodes with red plum, black raisin, tobacco, and baking spices over medium acidity alongside plentiful, perfectly integrated small tannins. The finish is long, dry, and terroir-driven with further clay pot and tobacco transitioning to barrel-kissed vanilla and spice on the exit. Argentina is home to some of the highest elevation vineyards on the planet, and it’s known that great wine was never made from easily grown grapes; the combination of being physically closer to the sun, benefitting from extreme drainage, and being planted to rough, relatively infertile soils makes for incredibly concentrated, deeply colored, flavorful grapes. Today’s release is a showcase of great wine having begun on these vines, then ushered into bottle by an incredibly talented winemaker at an unbeatable price for the quality.

Lot 831 comes to us from a certified organic and sustainable winery bolstered by a winemaker with global stints in California, Bordeaux, and South America. All estate-grown fruit is hand selected at optimal ripeness from vineyards beginning around 6,200 ft. and climbing up from there. After fermentation the wine is moved into second-pass French oak for a bit of aging before bottling. The result is an organic, concentrated Malbec that could easily pass muster with any Cab-loving aficionado with a steak in their future.

There’s nothing stand-offish about our Lot 917 Merlot from Washington State’s premier Wahluke Slope AVA. This 2021 red bursts from the glass like a racehorse from the starting line, with raspberry jam, mocha, and Cedar leading the charge. On your palate, its Wahluke Slope pedigree becomes apparent through a wealth of black cherry and Cassis flavors—the calling cards of the region. plump, ripe, and juicy plum flavors round out the full-bodied mouthfeel, followed by plenty of elegant wood accents that add spice and a sense of refinement to this red’s lengthy finish. This 2021 Merlot hails from “Sustainable WA” certified vineyards in the Wahluke Slope, an area of eastern Washington that’s been gaining serious traction among red wine lovers year after year since its official recognition in 2006.

Named after a Native American word meaning “watering place,” Wahluke Slope is actually one of the drier spots in Washington state, all of it sitting on a large alluvial fan with incredibly uniform, gravelly soils that evoke regular comparisons to the world’s foremost Merlot powerhouse region: Right Bank Bordeaux. Bordered by the Columbia River, Saddle Mountains, and Hanford Reach National Monument, there are only 20 vineyards in Wahluke Slope, and almost all of them grow incredible Merlot grapes.

Lot 886 2021 Alexander Valley Merlot, comes from a well-known Merlot-focused vintner who has been featured on Wine Spectator’s Top 10 Values lists and “10 Commendable California Merlots.” The Russian River, which snakes its way through Alexander Valley, brings cool air with it during the warm growing months, allowing the natural acids in grapes to remain firm, which leads to a remarkable freshness, or brightness, in the wine - a fantastic AVA to grow Merlot.

Today we have a wine from a relatively unknown wine region in California, Lot 919 2021 Contra Costa Petite Sirah with some really cool history. By the mid-1800s one of the most important farming communities in the entire United States—one still harboring a host of pre-prohibition vineyards planted in riverfront sand along a major Pacific Ocean inland delta—was Contra Costa County in the San Francisco East Bay. Today, residential buildings are more prevalent, many in the place of these historic heritage vineyards—but some have been saved.

Of those vineyards that have been spared by the bulldozer, some are the original vines planted by Italian immigrants rooted in beach sand dunes along the San Joaquin River Delta. Others are ‘younger’ vines, around 40-60 years old, planted by their descendants—‘young’ for Contra Costa but ‘old’ by California standards. And it is there, among the dunes, in a land rich with agriculture ghost stories of the past, that we sourced this fruit-forward Petite Sirah for Lot 919. Vines averaging 40 years of age are dry-farmed, producing small-berry clusters that are rich in flavor. A splash of Alicante Bouschet adds bright fruit qualities, while the Petite Sirah grapes bring muscle, robust tannins, and structure. Fire up the pizza oven, and send us an invite!
