Forget Argentina for a moment. Cahors in southwest France is Malbec’s original home, where the grape has been grown since the 13th century. We couldn’t think of a better place to stop for a taste than the estate of Bertrand-Gabriel Vigouroux, whose family have been experts in the dark art of Cahors Malbec since 1887. They have the long list of accolades from the likes of Jancis Robinson, Wine Spectator, and France’s prestigious Le Guide Hachette to show for it, too. Pretium is an exclusive they make just for you, and it’s everything a “Black Wine of Cahors” should be. Famed for its intense, light-absorbing color, Côt (as it’s called by locals) thrives on the Vigouroux family’s sloped vineyards overlooking the River Lot, gaining ultra ripeness and layer after layer of blackberry, black currant, and raspberry charm. Bold Pretium is a wine that cries out for an equally rich and flavorful meal. We like beef tagine, chicken curry, or spiced leg of lamb.

      Not a fan

Tannin heavy. Far from a smooth finish. Minimal improvement after allowing it to breathe a bit.

      Good wine

Good, drinkable, nice finish. Not quite dry enough for our taste, but wanted to give it a go.
